Nobel Winners
Since 1901, the prestigious Nobel Prizes have celebrated outstanding achievements in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, economics, literature and peace. Each year the respective Nobel Committees send individual invitations to thousands of members of academies, university professors, scientists from numerous countries, previous prize winners, members of parliamentary assemblies and others, asking them to submit candidates for the Nobel Prizes for the coming year. This year’s laureates will be announced in October, and the prizes presented in Stockholm and Oslo in December. Nobel Winners will profile this year’s winners and celebrate their achievements.
Nobel Peace
The Nobel Peace Prize is the most widely known but also the most controversial of the Nobel Prizes established in Alfred Nobel’s will. In 2007, the Nobel Peace Prize was shared, in two equal parts, between the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr., for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change. This year’s programme will profile the winner of the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize who will be announced in October. The winner will also be interviewed in a special edition of HARDtalk from Oslo.
World Debate: Nobel Minds
A special debate from Stockholm in which many of this year’s Nobel Prize winners gather to discuss their achievements and their relevance to the major issues of our time. There will also be the opportunity for BBC World viewers to ask questions of the laureates. Chaired by Sarah Montague.
